20150901_085649What happens when a flower addict has an incredibly black thumb?

One evening our family went to our local farmers market, and I was instantly drawn to a booth selling fragrant plants. As I tried to talk my husband into buying them for me, my daughter looked at me with raised eyebrows and said, “Why? You’ll just kill them.”

I wish I could say her statement was an exaggeration. So, what does a plant, most specifically, floral addict do when everything green seems to wither beneath her care?

She grabs her camera and heads outside to enjoy other’s people gardens. The one I encountered in Lake Placid, NY, took my breath away! And it spread nearly the entire grounds. I don’t know the names of these flowers but I’d love to, so if you do, please share!

Gardens of Memories

Digging in fresh tilled dirt. Watching seedlings pop up through the soil in neat rows. Pulling weeds. Picking the first ripe strawberry or tomato or cucumber. I absolutely LOVE to plant and tend to my vegetable garden and I’ll tell you all about my veggies in September right here in A Writer’s Garden.

Today I want to share pictures of flowers. I love all kinds of flowers from spring bulbs to fall asters. Here are a few pictures I snapped of my favorites.

I was blessed to have two grandmothers who influenced me to garden and they gave me many of the flowers I have today. As a child I tagged along while they weeded, picked, divided, and replanted their flowers. My Grandma P. (1919-2004) had a huge vegetable garden and flower beds all around her house. She once told me that weeding the vegetable garden was work, but weeding her flowers was a joy.

Here is one of her favorite blue irises blooming in my flower bed 2015.

My Grandma M. (1917-2014) also had a huge veggie garden and flowers all around her house. She once told me that the best way to learn how to do something is to just do it. Even if it means you mess up a bunch of times.

Here are pictures of her white irises in my flowerbeds 2015. This is the first spring since her passing.

I have never before seen these irises bloom in such beauty and abundance.

To me, flowers are amazing, comforting, and beautiful. Just like the people who gave them to me.

What flowers do you have from a friend or relative? What memories come to mind when you see them bloom? Thanks Catherine for having me here today!

Time for another installment of the Heritage Quilt Gardens. A few weeks ago I posted the first set of photos in this amazing set of gardens found in northern Indiana. Since I haven’t been able to get outside to work in my own gardens because of writing deadlines and guest blogs to promote my book, The Nun and the Narc, I’ve been having garden withdrawal. What better way to treat it than by another look at some beautiful flowers. So, without any further fanfare, here’s the next set of pictures from this year’s Heritage Quilt Garden.

After posting these I want to garden AND quilt, neither of which I have time for now.

Hope you enjoyed this walk Through the Garden Gates!
