June Foster is in the kitchen today with a Shepherd’s Pie recipe that has appeared on her family’s table as well as the table of her book characters. Welcome, June. Tell us a bit about the pie.

Thanks, Catherine. In The Long Way Home, David and Jada take refuge in the home of an Amish family. The first night, Anna Yoder makes Shepherd’s Pie. The recipe is also a favorite as I made it when I was young and didn’t know much about cooking. It is so easy.

Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients

1 pound of hamburger

1 8oz. can tomato sauce

1 15oz. can green beans, drained

2 large potatoes

1/4 cup butter

1/2 cup milk

Salt to taste

1 cup grated cheddar cheese

Directions:

Brown hamburger and drain fat. Mix in the tomato sauce and green beans and simmer.

Peel and boil the potatoes until soft. Mash with a fork and stir in butter. I like to use a beater and whip the potatoes with the milk until fluffy. Add more milk if necessary.

Pour meat mixture into a casserole and top with the potatoes. Sprinkle the cheese on top and bake thirty minutes at 350 degrees.

 The Long Way Home

by June Foster

David Maguire’s tour of duty in Germany is over, and he’s returning home to Oak Mountain, Alabama in search of a job. After a long flight from Frankfort, he shares an Uber with Dallas resident Jada Atwood.

Jada Atwood, a registered nurse midwife, is on her way to a medical conference in Queens. If only she could live up to her father’s legacy at the hospital where she works, she could prove worthy of his reputation. Marriage awaits yet her fiancé has yet to offer a ring.

When the Uber driver must make a stop to pick up a passenger at a Queens shopping center, two men who robbed a nearby bank commandeer the Ford as a getaway car. But when they discover two passengers, they have to get rid of the extra baggage.

After the kidnappers murder the Uber driver, David and Jada fear for their lives. Will they find their way home or die in a Pennsylvania forest?

Today’s Tasty Tuesdays recipe comes from author Gail Sattler. Although the recipe bears an unusual name, Gail assures me it’s a homemade Hamburger Helper recipe, developed by her mother-in-law. Gail didn’t forward a photo, but says if you close your eyes and think of Hamburger Helper, you’ve got it. Enjoy!

Sattler Family Goop

aka Hamburger Helper without the box

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 1 can tomato soup
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 pkg macaroni and cheese
  • optional- grated cheddar cheese and/or parmesan cheese

Directions:

  1. Cook the onion and ground beef until browned. Drain fat. At the same time, cook the macaroni.
  2. When the beef is cooked, add both soups and the contents of the cheese package, stir.
  3. Add the cooked macaroni. Stir.
  4. Serve – optional – top with grated cheddar cheese and/or grated parmesan cheese.

Notes:

This is a recipe that was originally a throw-together created by my mother-in-law. She owned and operated a small corner grocery store, back in the days before superstores were open late. Basically, it’s Hamburger Helper without the box. She had three growing boys to feed, and often not a lot of time to cook. For a big part of the summer my father-in-law was out of town on construction jobsites, so this recipe would also suit a single mother. I remember the first time I made this for my husband, he was floored. We still think of her every time I make this.

While you’re waiting for this cook, take a peek at the blurb for Gail’s Romantic Suspense The Other Neighbor.

Cheryl Richardson doesn’t know that her landlord who owns the other half of the duplex where she lives is plotting to build a bomb—but the FBI does. In order to discover what her landlord is planning to blow up, agent Steve Gableman moves next door to get closer to Cheryl to learn what she knows, namely the target and motive, so they can stop it. But when Steve involves himself in every area of her life, including her dog, will Cheryl be the one to explode?
