Welcome to A Writer’s Garden where writers who are gardeners or just love gardens will be sharing their garden and flower stories, as well as a bit about their writing.

Today’s guest gardener is Gail Sattler who will be talking about crabby things, mainly crabapples. Welcome, Gail!

Crabapples!

My garden is probably the best it’s ever been, but only after a few changes.

My pride and joy has always been my strawberry garden. Unfortunately the winters were too harsh for the last two years, and I lost 80% of my strawberry garden. Before you get too sad, my entire garden is only about 8 feet by 4 feet.

I did have some lovely strawberries, but for the most part, my empty garden was too sad. Therefore, I decided to plant a real garden. I have corn, carrots, and a couple of peppers. Outside of my garden, I planted a few tomato plants in sunny locations, as well as 3 pumpkin plants. So far they have flowers, but I’m thinking that they won’t be big and orange by Halloween. But they are growing and I’m happy about it.

But the biggest bonus was the crabapples. I don’t have just hundreds. There must be thousands on the tree. I have some good recipes for muffins and loaves, so when the weather cools down, I need to do a lot of baking. Mostly I’ve been giving them away.

As a writer, my trials in the garden are going to be some character’s backstory someday.  The disappointment, then determination to make a bad thing good, and then the joy when what they’ve worked for, really produced.

I wish I could share my crabapples. If anyone reading this lives in the Vancouver BC area, email me, and come pick!
